Relays are a great way to bring together teams of students who may be a bit too different to compete as one unit. They are also a great way to get kids moving in new ways. Each member of a team runs one leg of the race. Each leg is a specific distance, such as 100 meters. During the race, the team members pass the baton by handing it to the next runner within a certain zone, usually marked on the track with a set of visual markers. The incoming runner typically signals to the outgoing runner that they are close to the changeover zone by giving a verbal cue, such as “Stick!”.

Slick and fast baton exchanges are vital in sprint relay races. If a relay team fails to perform the proper handoff, it will lose valuable seconds in their final time. To minimize the possibility of error, coaches often choose the fastest runner to go first, followed by the second-fastest runner and then the slowest runner.

Mental Toughness: The Psychological Aspect of Sports Relay Racing

Adding fun to the usual running relay, add an element of water play with a bucket brigade. Form a line from a starting point to an empty bucket at the end of the line. Provide each team member with a balloon. As they race to their destination chair, they drop their balloon onto the chair and then sit on it until it pops. The first team to fill their bucket wins.
